Week 9: Technology Use Scenario

Hello Everyone,

During this particular blog post I will be stating a technology use scenario regarding an individual misusing or correctly utilizing a technological tool.  Thus, following the scenario a question has been stated; ultimately pertaining to the issue presented within the realm of the question.

Scenario 10:
"Kevin has just purchased the latest video game. Too fast '22. He and his friends enjoy playing games on their gaming systems. His best friend Vince also likes to play video games, but doesn't have the money to buy the latest games. Kevin decides to be a good friend and install a copy of his game on Vince's system. Does sharing games, music, or movies hurt anyone?"

My Personal Views:
Firstly, I truly believe that this particular utilization of the video game system is not being used to its intended purpose. In particular, it is apparent that Kevin is unaware that the action of copying games, music, or movies is illegal and a true violation of the creator’s privacy and intellectual property. Moreover, this particular notion has been previously mentioned by Michelle Langill’s blog post in which stresses the fact that copyright of any nature is truly an “illicit behavior”. The notion that Kevin was simply just trying to help out a good friend does not justify performing an illegal act due to the fact that he is robbing the creator of not only credit, but potential profits for the game itself.

Solution:
On a personal level, the only possible solution that could solve this particular problem would be to find a way to legally purchase the video game from a store or online. Furthermore, effectively saving up enough money to purchase the video game allows for the creator to receive the deserved credit and profits in which are evidently deserved.

How do you feel about this particular topic? Is the notion of copying games, videos, and music seriously harmful to anyone at all? Have your say!

Thanks for reading,

Moreover, this informative tool allows for people to efficiently and effectively communicate with one another even if they live far away from one another; suggestively providing the ultimate convenience for the tools users.

VoiceThread and My PLE:
On a personal level, I would add this collaborative and informative tool within the communicative area, which is present within the confines of the collaborating and socializing section of my PLE. In addition, the VoiceThread tool would be added to this particular area because it permits for individuals to interact and ultimately communicate with peers in an educational setting and fellow coworkers for various projects. Moreover, this tool could also be placed under the practicing digital responsibility sector of my own PLE based on the fact that it is crucially important for individuals to courteous and respectful to those who they may be interacting with on a day-to-day basis.
What does everyone else believe? Can this particular tool be used in a different manner? Could it fit under others areas of a PLE? I would enjoy reading your thoughts and opinions on this!

Here is a VoiceThread that I had the benefit of engaging within, which pertains to the notion of Digital Rights & Responsibilities. Be sure to give it a look!

Moreover, having become more familiar with this particular website, I have found that the abundance of educational resources I have located and categorized throughout this particular application had provided me with opportunities to expand my knowledge on an overall basis.

PLE & Evernote:
The notion of a PLE has arisen numerous times throughout the duration of the ADED 1P32 course so far. Personally, I believe that utilizing a PLE on a continual basis permits for various individuals to truly understand what information and pieces of data they have effectively obtained and potentially retained as a result. PLE & Twitter:
The term PLE has been brought up each and every week of the ADED 1P32 course. Personally, I feel as though a PLE at your disposal allows for any individual to realize where information and various resources can be obtained from. Thus, not capitalizing on the ability to obtain a PLE may leave an individual lost and stressed out about where information can be located. In particular, I would categorize Twitter under socializing/collaborating because the application provides an individual like me to converse and connect with various individuals and resources. Lastly, I would also place it under synthesizing and creating due to the fact that I can effectively provide new and useful information that other individuals may utilize in the future.

Weekly Reader Item!

Week 4: Cole's Weekly Report & Reflection Post

Hello Everyone!

This week I was able to set up an account through Diigo and bookmark various websites and articles that were of interest to an individual like me. In addition, I also utilized an online curation tool, Google Alerts, which allowed for me to collect various avenues of information that can be used throughout the remainder of the ADED 1P32 course. I found these two particular tools extremely useful because they allowed for me to save time and collect various pieces of information that may be useful to me throughout my academic journey.

Useful Tools!
While exploring the Diigo bookmarking tool and the use of tagging, I was able to learn just how useful these particular tools were when tracking articles and pieces of information that may be useful for future use. Personally, I found that the Diigo bookmarking tool allowed for me to save and ultimately keep track of more useful information; permitting for me to become a more organized individual. In addition, the tagging
tool provided me with the opportunity to analytically categorized the collected pieces of data and maintain a sense of relevancy for such information when called upon at a later date. Moreover, these particular tools will be useful throughout the duration of my educational activities because they allow for me to become a more informed and well-rounded individual; ultimately providing me with opportunities to expand my knowledge through various websites and other useful articles.

Becoming a Digital Citizen:
Throughout my journey so far, I have learned some important pieces of information in regards to becoming a digital citizen. Firstly, I truly believe that I have been able to realize the importance in properly obtaining and sharing information between my peers based on the fact that providing other individuals with misinformation and unreliable sources can only confuse and lead them down a non-credible pathway. Secondly, I have also learned that interacting with other individuals and sharing information with them in a proper and respectful way is of the up-most importance. In particular, being welcoming to each and every individual who chooses to share information and engage with others is key to eventually becoming a digital citizen and practicing the notion of digital literacy. Lastly, I was able to learn the importance in maintaining an open mind throughout the entire realm of being a digital citizen, which involves pursuing various avenues and extensions of the online world that I may have never looked at beforehand.

Week 3: Cole's Weekly Report & Reflection Post

Hello all!

I am back for the second blog post of the week! If you have not already had a chance to take a look at my prior blog post, be sure to do so as it contains a link to helpful advice within and outside of the academic realm!

Let us get this particular blog post underway shall we? This week I had the opportunity to learn about a website called feedly. This particular website allows individuals to keep up-to-date with various pieces news and blogs in which may peak their own views or interests. In comparison, feedly offers similar attributes to what Facebook offers the everyday consumer. Thus, this particular website permits for individuals to obtain popular news and updates from preferred bloggers that they have subscribed to.

Item of Interest:
While completing this week’s assigned learning activities in the ADED 1P32 course, I was able to pick out one item of interest from the Telegraph, which pertained to the January transfer window within the Barclays Premier League (BPL) or as some refer to it, the English Premier League (EPL). In particular, I chose a post that pertained to Newcastle United and their probable notion of switching targets during the January transfer window. Now at this point, some readers are probably wondering why I chose this particular posting and does this ultimately inform my own learning; I will get to that right now! This particular posting was chosen because I feel as though I am able to see it for more than a quick news story on soccer and identify the article for what it truly is. What can be identified in this particular article you may ask? The notion of a player’s sale value, the importance of bulking a team’s squad both in quality, and finding signings that will allow these clubs to achieve goals; particularly staying within the Premier League would be Newcastle United’s ultimate goal this season.
Moreover, I believe a post such as this allowed for an individual like me to develop my reading and comprehension skills, while notably seeing a variance in culture between how soccer is viewed in North America compared to the United Kingdom. Thus, I believe I have been able to become a more informed individual, while obtaining the notion on how article such as this should be written in order to grasp the interest of readers.

RSS Feed Readers – The Positives!
While looking through various blog posts, I found that RSS Feed Readers truly provide a positive contribute to my ability in building knowledge about various aspects (i.e., Digital literacy, responsibility, citizenship, etc.). In particular, I was able to see how various writers outline and display their work in order to obtain interest and understanding from the general public. Moreover, acquiring the ability to understand the effective format in which articles are written has allowed for me to communicate this information, requiring me to use both my cognitive and technical skills.

Reflection – My Final Thoughts!

Reflecting on the connection to my PLE Diagram:
I have found that these particular tools best relate to the notions of organizational content, digital literacy, and socializing/collaborating. Categorizing these particular tools within the confines of my personal learning environment (PLE) to a further extent, I would place them under the means of note taking (i.e., Writing down points to discuss in an article), evaluating resources (i.e., Locating credible sources), and communication (i.e., Utilizing avenues of email, texting, and social media outlets to absorb information and share such information to the general public). Moreover, these particular types of tools would allow for me to further my knowledge within my own field of study (Sport Management); ultimately providing future opportunity to grasp a greater understanding of such processes.

That’s all for this week!

Week 3: My Personal Experience With RSS Feeds

Being a university student, I have always found myself looking to obtain the best study tips and general advice towards what steps or extensions within the post-secondary realm I should be looking into. After doing some research I was able to stumble upon Stefan Knapen’s Study Successful blog in which I found to be very informative and engaging for an individual like myself. To exemplify, Knapen’s blog on "Should You Get A Master's Degree?" provides an individual with insight and helpful tips when considering the potential pursuit of a master’s degree. In particular, Knapen provides insight into financial costs, managing ones classes, and ultimately weighing up the pros and cons of immersing oneself in a master’s degree.

This particular blogger also posted an article in relation to self-growth and ultimately learning from ones mistakes. In addition, Knapen provides tips and advice to help individuals embrace their mistakes and develop as better individuals and learners. Those who choose to read these blogs may not necessarily be students, but those who seek helpful advice on everyday life events. Feel free to go Stefan Knapen’s blog a look; I am sure you will not regret it!

Week 2: Cole's Weekly Report & Reflection Post

Where Will I Be?
I have always wondered where I could or will end up in the future. At the moment, I am currently in my final year at Brock University within the Sport Management program. After I graduate from university, I am not really sure where I may end up! However, I am currently pursuing the possibility in taking an internship this summer in which may help me guide my future career and life plans. Personally, I am always fearful of whether or not I may even remain in my field of study. Could I end up spending a majority of my career in a sector completely unrelated to the sports field? Who knows! Ultimately, I already know I am determined to graduate and complete my degree in Sport Management and find a job that I look forward to going to each and every day. Moreover, I know achieving these particular goals will require patience and hard work, which I truly believe I already possess!

With all this wondering, one thing that really assisted me in getting such issues on track is a tool called a personal learning environment or PLE.

Personal Learning Environment (PLE)
The notion of a personal learning environment (PLE) is a term in which refers to a system that can ultimately assist you in learning and permits for individuals to manage and take control of their life. Thus, this particular tool allows for individuals to teach themselves and gain valuable input. Personally, I always find myself getting very worried about where I will be in even a year from now (i.e., “Where will I find a job?”). However, this week in my adult education class I was able to discover the personal learning environment tool and learned that it can aid in my path towards achieving my particular goals. The pictured depicted below is just one particular example of what a PLE may look like in any given case. I was able to make this model through the Gliffy website. In particular, at the very center of this diagram is the “Networking Tools” in which incorporates various utensils that allow for me to be organized.

Pettem C. (CC) 2016.
Moreover, when I get concerned about where I could potentially start my career and find a job, I could always reflect on this particular picture and look where I need to start from. For example, I can lead myself from “networking tools” to “socializing/collaborating” to “question?” and then to “Google” where I can begin looking at potential openings.

Reflection - My Final Thoughts!

Reflecting on my PLE Diagram:
I have found that my particular PLE diagram may be a bit empty and ultimately does not provide me with many options to turn to; limiting my options. Thus, over time, I will be looking to add to this diagram and fill it with bits of information in which will help me succeed in the future.

Reflecting on my word cloud:
I found this particular activity to be very fun and enjoyable. In particular, this activity allowed for me to be creative and engaged. In addition, the word cloud activity permitted for an individual like me to take the words in my original post and ultimately reflect on the key terminology used; making me a much more informed individual. Thus, the word cloud allowed for me to learn that I prefer clean, clear, and concise writing; ultimately fitting into my preference of being an organized individual. Moreover, the activity also depicted the various thoughts and opinions that I have shared and potentially could expand upon as time progresses.
Pettem C. (2016).
Connection to course readings:
In regards to my current PLE, the notion of connecting with other individuals for the purpose of learning is already addressed through my utilization of email, texting, and various extensions of social media (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Thus, Lalonde (2012) identifies the utilization of a personal learning network (PLN) in which allows people to potentially assist another person in learning by guiding or directing them in finding answers to potential questions one may have. To exemplify, I am able to look at my PLE diagram and direct myself to the various “communication” extensions in which I marked down; permitting for me to connect with other individuals and improve my knowledge and understanding as an individual. Moreover, utilizing a personal learning network would also allow for me to interact and gain relations with individuals within the field of Sport Management; providing future opportunities for work experience and references for the future.

That’s it for this week!

Week 1: Cole's Weekly Report & Reflection Post

Reflecting on a digital footprint:
The notion of a digital footprint pertains to information regarding any particular individual and the accumulation of his or hers digital activity from childbirth to the present day. Moreover, a digital footprint is a concept that all individuals should understand and be able to grasp the importance behind such a notion. This week’s readings of "7 things you should know about blogs" by Educause Learning Initiative (2005) and the video "Digital Dossier" by Youth and Media allowed me to learn that whether you want one or not, you will most likely have some measure of a digital footprint. In addition, I learned about the positive and negative implications in which a digital footprint can impose upon an individual’s life. However, even though you cannot effectively control possessing a digital footprint due to the fact that one is created for you before birth (i.e., ultrasound pictures, medical records, etc.), an individual can ultimately control the benefits and drawbacks.

Digital Footprint

Although the notion of a digital footprint may potentially seem alarming to some individuals, the ability to impose a positive position within the online realm is a true benefit ones digital future. In particular, any individual can utilize such means to keep track of photos and connect with friends and family on a regular basis. In particular, if you were looking to produce a family tree and discover family roots, an individual could use his or her digital footprint to effectively produce such means. Thus, if you are able to strategize the overall maintenance of a digital footprint, the ability for potential drawbacks to occur will be limited. To exemplify, if an individual is able to digitally cleanse his or her profile of matter that may be deemed inappropriate or unnecessary on a monthly basis, a positive reflection pertaining to that individual can be displayed. After doing some quick research, I found a video that depicts this particular strategy alongside other potential means of maintenance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvt1wEXqU2k. Personally, I truly enjoy the fact that I possess a digital footprint and I will look to continually upload bits of information to my various social media accounts (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and continue to grow my digital footprint.

Reflecting on Netiquette | Relationship between Netiquette and a Digital Footprint:
Netiquette or network etiquette is a list of rules in which one should abide by in order to effectively behave or act within an appropriate standard on the internet. In particular, this week’s readings and resources provided students with a website in which outlines the notion of netiquette http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html. Moreover, the rule I found to be of key importance is to respect other people’s privacy. It is inherently important for individuals to know that even though you may be seeking particular information, it is unnecessary and inappropriate for one to exploit another person’s digital well-being for personal gain. In addition, it is also necessary for individuals to be polite and welcoming on the internet as a whole. Thus, the dynamic relationship between these particular notions permits for people to still retain a meaningful level of privacy throughout the internet and not have be fearful of the harm or abuse that may come from other individuals.

Connection between a Digital Citizen and a Digital Footprint:
Being a Digital Citizen requires for any individual to be responsible for one’s actions in which he or she may take while sharing or engaging within the digital world. In particular, these two notions share a connection in terms of the awareness and general etiquette needed in order for an individual to engage with other internet users, while effectively limiting abuse and harm. Otherwise, I have been able to learn that digital learning and being a digital citizen allows for an individual like me to grasp information from a variety of outlets and engage with people I may have never thought of in the first place. However, I do believe I need to learn how to engage in a greater capacity due to the fact that I find myself sometimes shying away from such interactive means.

Digital Driver’s License Exam – My Thoughts!
This particular exam allows for individuals to review their own knowledge pertaining to digital etiquette. I was able to score 19/20 and permitted for me to truly realize what areas I should pay more attention to within the areas of digital citizenship. To exemplify, I found that I have become increasingly focused on the notion pertaining to digital health and wellness based on the fact that it is one key area I believe that needs to be improved.

On an overall basis, I was able to learn about how crucial it is for any individual to be aware what he or she is sharing and how they may interact on the internet.

That’s a wrap for my thoughts this week!

Cole Pettem

Introduction

Hello!

My name is Cole Pettem. I am currently a fourth year Sport Management student at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. I am on overall passionate sports fan. In particular, my favourite sports are hockey, soccer, and football. Since I was four or five years old I have been immersed in playing hockey and soccer, while also having a brief two year stint participating in the minor lacrosse league in my hometown. Thus, since sport has been such an important part of my young life, I have had the distinct privilege in pursuing my passion within the academic and eventually professional realm. Alongside sport, I possess additional interests such as music (i.e., Country, rap, hip hop, etc.), travel (i.e., Day and weekend road trips with friends), and watching movies or television shows (i.e., Friday Night Lights, Gotham, Suits, etc.).

This particular blog has been created to formally post weekly reflections and reports for one of my four courses this semester, ADED 1P32 (Learning in Digital Contexts). The blog will permit for an individual like me to effectively communicate my own thoughts and opinions on weekly readings and assignments throughout the ADED 1P32 course. I originally enrolled in this particular course based on the fact that I am eager to learn about different extensions throughout the online realm and potential tools that can be utilized to enhance my education and digital understanding.

I hope everyone enjoys my blog and I look forward to interacting with you all this semester!

Cheers,

Cole Pettem
